Are You Considering Newborn Photography? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
If you’re expecting a baby in the Cumming, Alpharetta, or North Metro Atlanta area and you’ve started googling newborn photographers, this post is for you.
The newborn phase passes faster than anyone warns you it will. Those tiny curled-up hands, that fuzzy hair, the way they tuck their knees in like they’re still dreaming, all of it is gone before you’ve had a chance to fully exhale. Newborn photography exists to slow that moment down and give you something to hold onto forever.
I know you’re probably juggling a hundred decisions right now. My goal is to make this one easy. Here’s everything I hear new parents ask, answered honestly.
“What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?”
Newborn photography is a specialty, and it matters that your photographer is trained in it. Newborns have very specific safety needs during posing, and an experienced photographer will know how to keep your baby comfortable, warm, and secure throughout the entire session.
At Scarlet Oak Photography, I’ve completed extensive newborn safety training and have worked with countless newborns and their families right here in the studio. I take pride in creating a calm, unhurried environment — one where you can actually relax and enjoy this experience rather than spend it stressed.
Beyond safety, look at their portfolio. Does their style feel like something you’d want on your wall for the next twenty years? That’s the standard worth holding.

“What does a newborn session look like?”
We typically photograph at my Alpharetta studio, where we can control every element of the environment from temperature and lighting, to the pace of the session. This makes a meaningful difference with newborns, who need a warm, quiet space to settle.
Sessions are calm and flexible by nature. I work around feeding and soothing needs, and there’s no rushing. Parents and siblings are always welcome to be part of the images, and if you have a specific pose or prop you love, I’m happy to work it in.
I recommend scheduling your session within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. This is when newborns are sleepiest and most naturally curled, which gives us the most flexibility for those beautiful wrapped poses. I suggest booking during your second trimester to make sure we have your due date locked in.
“Do I need to bring anything?”
Not much at all. The studio is fully stocked with wraps, blankets, props, and backdrops and everything your baby needs is here. If there’s something personal you’d like to incorporate, like a special blanket or a handmade item that means something to your family, I’d love to include it. Many of my Cumming and Alpharetta clients also love to bring a custom swaddle or name sign from Caden Lane to add a personalized detail to their gallery.

“When will I receive my photos?”
After your session, you can expect your finished gallery within approximately two weeks. I’ll go over all the details with you before your session day so you know exactly what to expect.
“How much does newborn photography cost?”
Newborn sessions at Scarlet Oak Photography are all-inclusive, meaning everything is taken care of, including the studio, the props, the styling, and your finished gallery. I know photography is an investment, and I take that seriously, which is why I’ve designed the experience so you can just show up and enjoy it.
