Right now you might be focused on nursery decor, baby registries, and figuring out which car seat actually fits in your backseat. Booking a newborn photographer? That feels like something future-you can handle after the baby arrives.
But here’s the thing.
Future-you is going to be sleep-deprived, healing, and figuring out feeding schedules — and if those early weeks feel heavier than expected, resources like Postpartum Support International exist to remind you that you’re never alone.
If you’ve been wondering when to book a newborn photographer, this post is for you.
As a newborn photographer serving Cumming, Alpharetta, Roswell, and the North Atlanta area, here’s exactly what I tell every expecting parent.

That Magical Sleepy Window (And Why It Won’t Wait for You)
There’s a reason photographers talk about the “5–14 day window.” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborn sleep patterns shift quickly in the first few weeks.
Between about 7–14 days old, babies tend to:
- Sleep more deeply
- Curl naturally into those cozy, womb-like poses
- Be less aware of being moved or repositioned
That’s when those extra-squishy, sleepy images are easiest to create.

After about two weeks, babies start changing quickly.
They’re more alert.
They make more eye contact.
They stretch out.
They notice the world.
And here’s the important part: that’s not bad. It’s just different.

I’ve photographed babies over a month old. Those sessions tend to be more awake, more expressive, sometimes with sweet eye contact. The posing looks a little different. The flow feels a little different.
But they’re still beautiful.
The biggest misconception about the newborn photography timeline is that if you miss 14 days, you’ve ruined everything. You haven’t. What matters most is a healthy baby and a calm family.
That said — booking early gives you options.
The Sweet Spot for Booking (Hint: You’re Probably Pregnant Right Now)
If you’re asking how early to book newborn photos, here’s my honest answer:
During pregnancy.
Most of my newborn sessions book 4–6 weeks in advance, sometimes more during busy seasons. I typically photograph 4–8 newborns per month, and I limit that intentionally.
Newborn sessions are physical. They’re detailed. They require patience and presence. I don’t stack them back-to-back.
When you book during your second or early third trimester, here’s what happens:
- We reserve your due date on my calendar.
- I plan availability around your estimated arrival.
- You receive my welcome guide and styling information.
- We can talk through maternity + newborn packages if that’s something you’re considering.
- You get this checked off your list before the newborn haze sets in.
I don’t schedule an exact session date months in advance. Instead, your due date holds space. When baby arrives (or when you head to the hospital), you reach out and we choose your actual session day based on how everyone is feeling.
It’s flexible by design. Babies don’t follow calendars, and I plan accordingly.

What Happens If Baby Comes Early (Or Fashionably Late)
Babies have their own timelines.
Recently, I had a maternity client go into labor early. We never got to do her maternity session — we moved straight into newborn photos instead. Because she was already on my calendar, it was simple to adjust.
When a client books, I:
- Keep their due date visible in my planning calendar
- Limit how many due dates I accept in a given week
- Build flexibility into my schedule
If baby arrives early, I make space.
If baby is overdue, we wait. No pressure.
If you message me from the hospital, that’s completely normal. We adjust together.
Planning ahead means I can serve you well without scrambling or overbooking.

Why Your Favorite Photographers Book Up Fast
Here’s the honest truth: newborn photographers can’t photograph unlimited babies.
I take 4–8 newborn sessions per month because:
- Sessions are long and hands-on
- Editing is detailed and time-intensive
- I want every family to feel cared for, not squeezed in
I have had to turn families away. I’ve had messages that say, “My baby is five days old — do you have anything this week?” And sometimes the answer is no.
Those are hard emails to send.
Sometimes I can fit in a last-minute session if I have availability. If I don’t, I refer to photographers I trust. And if baby is already a little older, we shift expectations and create something that fits their stage beautifully.
But booking early means you’re choosing your photographer intentionally — not just whoever happens to have an opening.
The Consultation Call That Changes Everything
I offer an optional consultation call, but many families book simply through email and my pricing guide.
Once you inquire (usually through Google or Instagram/Facebook), here’s what happens:
- I reply with details and pricing.
- We secure your due date with a retainer.
- You receive my welcome guide.
- We talk through styling, my client closet, and any sentimental details.
If you’re a rainbow baby family, we talk about that.
If you have heirloom pieces or items tied to loss, we incorporate them gently and intentionally.
One of my favorite parts of this process is getting to know you before baby arrives. It allows me to walk into your session already understanding what this season means to you.
That connection changes everything.
“But What If I’m Already Past That Window?”
If you’re reading this while holding your newborn and thinking, “Oops,” take a breath.
First, you’re not alone.
Second, reach out anyway.
Sometimes I have space. Sometimes I can adjust. Sometimes we shift into a slightly older newborn session and embrace more eye contact and interaction.
Timing matters, but it’s not everything.
A healthy baby and a supported family always matter more than a specific day on the calendar.

Ready to Chat? Here’s What Reaching Out Looks Like
If you’re wondering how to schedule newborn pictures, it’s simple.
When you reach out, it’s helpful to include:
- Your due date
- Whether this is your first baby
- Any initial questions you have
Most inquiries come through Google searches for a Cumming GA newborn photographer or Alpharetta newborn photographer, or through Instagram and Facebook.
After you send your message:
- I typically reply within 24 hours.
- I send pricing and package information.
- We secure your due date with a retainer.
- You receive your welcome guide and next steps.
There’s no pressure in that first email. You are never “too early.” I’m happy to hear from you at any point in pregnancy.
Honestly, I love connecting before baby arrives. It makes your session feel calm and familiar instead of rushed.

Your Future Self Will Thank You
After years of photographing newborns, here’s what I’ve learned:
The actual session day is less important than the planning.
When families book during pregnancy, everything feels easier. There’s room for flexibility. There’s room for conversation. There’s no panic about availability.
If my best friend called me tomorrow and said she just found out she’s pregnant, I’d tell her this:
Book your newborn photographer now.
You can always adjust dates.
You can’t always create availability later.
Planning ahead isn’t about being rigid. It’s about giving yourself peace of mind.
And your sleep-deprived, postpartum self will be so grateful you did.
If you’re expecting and want to start the conversation, I’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re in Cumming, Alpharetta, Roswell, or anywhere along the North Atlanta corridor, we can reserve your due date and build a plan that fits your family.
And if you’ve already had your baby? Reach out anyway. We’ll figure it out together.

Such good insight on when to book your newborn session and why – you’re amazing at capturing their sweetness at every age, but that magical sleepy window is gold!
Thank you! There definitely is magic to that sleepy stage, but I do love a wide eyed older newborn too!
Excellent advice and gorgeous photos!
Thank you, Charlotte!
The newborn bubble is such a blur and the lack of sleep catches up to you quickly! Prebooking my newborn photos seriously saved my sanity.
Any prep ahead of time makes life so much easier in those sweet early days!
That last tidbit, “Planning ahead isn’t about being rigid. It’s about giving yourself peace of mind” is EXACTLY it!
Planning can make all the difference with a sweet newborn!
This is so helpful to understand the difference in the type of alertness baby have at different stages and ages!
The different stages can get such wildly different images, both just as beautiful!
I photograph newborns from 10 days to six weeks old, but I agree the younger babies tend to stay asleep longer and love being swaddled!
They definitely change so much in those first few weeks!
This was such helpful information! Tt’s easily one of those things that sneaks up on you !
Definitely! Those early days with a newborn can definitely be a blur!
This is such helpful information! I feel like it’s one of those things that fells really important but not urgent. This was a great reminder!
