Some days, you just need to get out of the house in Atlanta.
But if you’ve already done the playground circuit a dozen times and the thought of planning a big day out feels totally overwhelming—I get it.
The good news? Atlanta is full of family friendly activities that don’t require a ton of prep, reservations, or a packed schedule. These are quick, simple, and fun ways to make memories without the stress.
Here are 7 of my favorite family friendly things to do in Atlanta—perfect for busy parents and happy kids alike.
1. Library Storytime or Activity Hours
Don’t underestimate your local library—it’s a total hidden gem for easy outings. Fulton County and Dekalb County libraries offer regular storytimes, toddler music sessions, and even STEM-based activity hours, and most are completely free.
I love the Alpharetta Library’s interactive storytime—plus, the cozy reading nooks make it a great place to chill on a rainy day. Check your local branch’s website or follow them on Facebook for updates!
2. Self-Guided Art Walks or Mural Hunts
Atlanta is known for its vibrant art scene, and you don’t need tickets to enjoy it. Murals, sculptures, and outdoor installations can be found all around the city—from Krog Street Tunnel and the BeltLine, to neighborhoods like Cabbagetown and Little Five Points.
Search Instagram hashtags like #AtlantaMurals or check out the Atlanta Street Art Map to plan your own DIY art walk. Turn it into a scavenger hunt for the kids to make it extra fun!

3. Petting Zoos & Farm Visits
Animal-loving kiddos? You don’t need to go far. Fritz Farm in Cumming and The Art Barn at Morning Glory Farm in Canton both offer casual drop-in visits (just double-check hours on their websites first!).
These types of locations often have animals to feed or pet, picnic areas, and even seasonal activities—great for a spontaneous day out. Just double-check their hours before heading out!

4. Outdoor Picnic & Play
For a zero-prep outing, you can’t beat a good picnic. Just grab a blanket, pick up Chick-fil-A on the way, and head to one of Atlanta’s beautiful parks.
Consider checking out:
- Morgan Falls Overlook Park (Sandy Springs) – lake views + a fantastic playground
- Piedmont Park (Midtown) – open space, splash pad, and always something happening
- Brook Run Park (Dunwoody) – shaded walking trails + huge play area
Google “best picnic spots in Atlanta” for even more gems!
5. Indoor Play Cafés or Open Gym Times
Need an escape from bad weather (or your own four walls)? Indoor play spots are lifesavers. Places like Tumbles in Johns Creek and Catch Air in Marietta offer open play hours, and many don’t require a reservation.
Bonus: The Bunny Hive in Chamblee and Roswell is a sweet, calm sensory space that offers drop-in mommy & me style classes, perfect for littles under 3.

6. Easy Hiking Trails for Kids
If your crew needs some fresh air and movement, try a local hiking trail with kid-friendly vibes. We love Big Creek Greenway (Alpharetta) for its stroller-friendly path and peaceful atmosphere.
Other favorites:
- Sope Creek Trail (Marietta) – explore the ruins + water
- Cochran Shoals Trail (near the Chattahoochee River) -flat path and shady trees
- Autrey Mill Nature Preserve (Johns Creek) – historic buildings, trails, and rescued animals!
Tip: Bring water shoes if there’s a creek nearby—it turns into a whole new adventure.
7. Last-Minute Free Community Events
From outdoor movies to food truck Fridays, Atlanta’s suburbs always have something going on—you just have to know where to look.
Keep an eye on:
- Facebook Events (search by your ZIP code)
- Atlanta Parent Magazine’s calendar
- Your city’s Parks & Rec newsletter
- Explore Georgia Events
One of our favorites? The free summer concert series at Avalon in Alpharetta—live music, open lawn, and space to run around.
Final Thoughts
When you’re stuck in the same routine, breaking out of it can be as simple as trying one new spot.
Pick a place from this list, do a quick search to check the details, and go make a memory—without overthinking it. Sometimes the best outings aren’t the ones you spend forever planning—they’re the ones you actually do.
