You’ve booked your heirloom portrait session, you’re dreaming of those soft, classic images… and then it hits you:
What are they supposed to wear?
If you’ve ever searched “heirloom photo outfits” and ended up overwhelmed with trendy pieces that just don’t feel right, you’re not alone. This is easily one of the most common questions I get from families before their session.
And honestly, it makes sense. These portraits are meant to last for generations. The outfits matter.
Over the years, I’ve slowly built a go-to list of shops that consistently photograph beautifully, and today I’m sharing all of my favorites with you.
Why Regular Stores Won’t Cut It for Heirloom Photo Outfits (And What to Look for Instead)

Most everyday stores are designed around trends. Bright colors, bold prints, graphics, fast fashion.
The problem is… those things don’t translate well in heirloom portraits.
What photographs best is actually very simple:
- Soft, neutral tones
- Classic silhouettes
- High-quality fabrics
- Minimal patterns
- Timeless details like smocking, lace, and embroidery
I’ve had sessions where an outfit looked perfectly fine in person, but in photos it completely pulled attention away from the child. That’s usually when I remind families that heirloom portraits are less about fashion and more about preserving a moment.
These pieces aren’t meant to be worn once and forgotten. They’re meant to feel like something you’d recognize 20 years from now.
My Favorite Online Boutiques for Heirloom Portrait Clothing

If you don’t have time to search endlessly, these are the shops I come back to again and again.
Feltman Brothers
A classic for a reason. Their pieces are beautifully made with traditional details like smocking and embroidery. Perfect for babies and younger children.
Petit Ami & Zubels
Great for soft knits and classic baby pieces that still feel elevated but comfortable.
La Coqueta
If you love a slightly European, elevated look, this is a favorite. Think structured but still soft and timeless.
Trotters Childrenswear
Another great option for classic styles, especially for slightly older children.
Rylee + Cru (select pieces)
This one leans a bit more modern, but they occasionally release neutral, simple pieces that photograph beautifully if styled carefully.
Tip: Always look for their lighter, softer collections and avoid anything overly trendy.
Hidden Gems: Local Boutiques Worth Visiting

There’s something really special about finding a piece in person.
Local children’s boutiques often carry higher-quality brands you won’t find in big stores, and you can actually see the fabric, fit, and color before committing. For heirloom portraits especially, that makes a huge difference.
If you’re in North Atlanta, here are a few local spots worth checking:
The Children’s Shoppe – Atlanta
A true go-to for classic children’s clothing. They carry beautifully made, traditional pieces with smocking, embroidery, and soft color palettes that photograph exactly how you want heirloom portraits to feel. If you’re unsure where to start, this is one of the easiest places to walk into and find something that works.
Janie and Jack – Avalon
While it’s a larger brand, this is one of my favorite accessible options locally. Their seasonal collections almost always include soft neutrals, linen pieces, and simple silhouettes that work beautifully for portraits when styled intentionally.
Piggy Jo’s – Halcyon
Such a fun local boutique with a mix of playful and classic pieces. You’ll want to be a little selective here, but they often carry softer, neutral options that can work beautifully for heirloom sessions when styled simply.
Babies & Blooms – Woodstock
A sweet local shop with a more boutique feel. This is a great place to find softer fabrics, baby pieces, and more delicate styles that photograph really well for younger children and milestone sessions.
Tiny Threads – Flowery Branch
A newer favorite for elevated, curated children’s clothing. Think simple, well-made pieces with a modern but still timeless feel. Great for parents who want something classic without it feeling overly traditional.
What I always tell clients when shopping locally:
- Ask what brands they carry. That tells you a lot about the overall quality
- Look for natural fabrics like cotton or linen
- Skip anything overly trendy, bright, or graphic
- If it feels simple and classic in person, it will photograph beautifully
And honestly, sometimes the best outfits are the ones you weren’t even planning on finding. A quick stop while you’re out in Alpharetta or North Atlanta can turn into the outfit.
Etsy Sellers and Handmade Options That Never Disappoint

Some of the most beautiful heirloom outfits I’ve ever photographed have come from Etsy.
Handmade pieces just have a different feel. The textures, the details, the fit. It all photographs so softly and intentionally.
A few tips when shopping Etsy:
- Order early (custom pieces can take weeks)
- Check reviews with photos
- Message the seller if you’re unsure about sizing
- Look for natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or muslin
These are especially great if you want something truly unique or sized perfectly for your child.
Smart Shopping Tips to Make Your Heirloom Outfit Hunt Easier

A few things I always tell my clients:
Start early
Give yourself at least 2–3 weeks if possible, especially if ordering online.
Keep it simple
You don’t need complicated outfits. In fact, the simpler the better.
Coordinate, don’t match
If you’re including siblings, aim for colors that complement each other rather than identical outfits.
Have a backup
Kids are unpredictable. Having a second option can save a lot of stress.
When in doubt, ask
You can always send me outfit options. I’m happy to help you choose what will photograph best.
Your Perfect Heirloom Photo Outfits Are Out There (I Promise)

I know this part of the process can feel overwhelming at first.
But once you know what to look for, it becomes so much easier. And honestly, it can even be fun.
There’s something really special about choosing an outfit that your child will be photographed in at this exact stage of life. One day, those images will feel like a time capsule.
And that’s why it’s worth the extra effort.
If you ever feel stuck, unsure, or just want a second opinion, I’m always here to help guide you through it. This is one of my favorite parts of the process.
